DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC.
PROGRAMMING
Since its founding in 1913 Delta Sigma Theta has clearly distinguished itself as a public service organization that boldly confronts the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans. Over the years, a wide range of programs addressing education, health, international development, and strengthening of the African American family have evolved. In realizing its mission, Delta Sigma Theta provides an extensive array of public service initiatives through its Five-Point Program Thrust of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement.
ECONOMIC
DEVELOPMENT
African Americans have been economically disenfranchised due to racism and other social ills. The NMAC Economic Development Committee, with instruction from our national body, seeks to change the course of this grave tragedy. Our mission is to encourage and improve the economic well-being thus leading to a change in the quality of life for our community. This goal is accomplished through pairing individuals with knowledge, tools, and resources.
PHYSICAL & MENTAL
HEALTH
Studies have shown that African Americans suffer from a myriad of diseases at greater rates than any other population. The NMAC Health and Wellness Committee is dedicated to bringing awareness to this fact and teaching persons of color how to live in a manner that enhances overall well-being. Through fun and interactive events, the committee tackles difficult topics and teaches our community how to eat and live better. To this end, annually we host a Health Symposium to accomplish this goal and honor trailblazers in the field of medicine.
EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
To promote and enhance the educational values of youth within the community that encourage and support our future leaders of tomorrow. Delta Academy, Delta GEMS, and EMBODI serve young people age 11-18 by promoting academic excellence and provide scholarships thru tools that will enable our youth to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success.
INTERNATIONAL
AWARENESS & INVOLVEMENT
NMAC wants to encourage involvement in international affairs, especially affairs that affect people of the African Diaspora, as well educate the community at-large on current and ongoing issues within the international arena.
POLITICAL AWARENESS &
INVOLVEMENT
Social Justice and protecting the rights of human beings is at the very core of what Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded upon. Our National Social Action Commission strives earnestly to ensure that issues impacting our country and world are at the forefront of our consciousness. Locally, we earnestly seek to empower the residents of Inwood and Washington Heights, through forging partnerships with community organizations.
ARTS & LETTERS
Creativity and expressionism have been an integral component of the African American experience. The NMAC Arts and Letters Committee highlight the beautifully unique and often overlooked aspects of our culture. Whether it is providing tickets to a small but profound theater experience or showcasing the talent of our own sorors, the Arts and Letters Committee works diligently to keep our membership enlightened. Through this work, we keep our hand on the pulse of the African American artistic scene; knowing that through exposure and support, the arts will never die.
